Chicago Grammar School

The CGS Community

CGS teachers, groups and parents work together to build a strong sense of community.  Every day through thoughtful communication, we build camaraderie, engagement, and a sense of belonging.   Families are invited and welcome to attend classroom and school events, presentations, competitions and performances – formal and informal alike.  The CGS Student Council takes the pulse of the student body and works with the teachers to address children’s interests and concerns.  Book clubs and parent/teacher gatherings provide avenues for mindful and entertaining interactions.  Parent sponsored events make teachers feel appreciated.

Social Awareness and Community Service

Both in the classroom and outside of it, students gain perspective on social ills and an understanding that it is everyone’s responsibility to care for one another and for the natural world on a local, national and global scale.

Parents join faculty and staff in organizing and supporting students’ efforts and modeling a personal commitment to social awareness and community service.  Active parental involvement is especially important as we host food/clothing/toiletry drives and participate in off-campus elementary and middle school projects.

Examples include:

  • The Student Council initiated winter clothing drive and subsequent service days at Cradles to Crayons.
  • Echoes of the Civil Rights Movement Speech Contest
  • The Camp Tecumseh Foundations for Success program where students are introduced to five key skills: leadership, trust, communication, problem solving, and self-confidence.
