Chicago Grammar School

Lower Elementary: Foreign Language

Conversational Spanish is taught in Grades K-4. Beginning in Third Grade, Latin is integrated with the English Grammar program. Latin is now added to the English grammar, usage, mechanics, and writing class. We tell our parents that just as phonics is a “learner” subject that eases the task of reading words, Latin Is a “learner” language aiding in the comprehension of any language system. At CGS it specifically aids in comprehending the systems of English and Spanish.  Latin vocabulary with English derivatives is introduced as well as the grammar concepts of verb tense, person, and number.  An annual highlight for our beginning Latin students is participation in the UK’s Minimus Mythology Art Competition.
