Cradles to Crayons Service Project

CGS Student Council chose to work with  Cradles to Crayons as a school service project to help children in need.   They've initiated a toy drive and CGS families are rallying to provide new and gently used toys. The students (with some parents and teachers) will work at the Cradles to Crayons warehouse.  They’ll sort, clean and organize donated items for children who need clothing, toys, coats, boots, and more.  They will also make hand-written “Well Wish Note” with a message for each…

Chicago Shakespeare Theater – Comedy of Errors

The annual CGS trip to the Chicago Shakespeare Theater is a student and teacher favorite.  This year they are attending a production of The Comedy of Errors. Grades four and up prepare for the performance by learning the story, studying some text and discussing the plot points.  The story comes alive as they illustrate scenes, perform in-class readings and preview set elements.  This year, grades seven and eight have even taken up the task of writing and illustrating a young…

CGS seeks to repeat success, having won the Illinois Certamen League Junior High Division – Chicagoland Region for five out of the past six years.  Certamen, meaning “contest” in Latin, exists at the junior high, high school and collegiate levels and is regarded as a Latin Quiz Bowl. Teams of four players compete head to head answering questions about the Latin language (grammar, vocabulary, usage), Roman culture, history, and literature, and Greek and Roman mythology. 2020 Chicago Auto Show

One of the favorite CGS field trips of the year is visiting the Chicago Auto Show in conjunction with the sixth-grade energy unit in science.  The students examine and discuss emerging automotive technologies, our carbon footprints, the environmental impact of driving, and innovations in the sources and uses of energy.  Plus, the students (and the chaperones!) thoroughly enjoy wandering the cavernous McCormick Place showrooms and exploring the really cool cars!

Presidents’ Day – no class

Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday established to honor the Presidents of the United States.  Well…. not really.  The official federal holiday is actually Washington’s Birthday, to be celebrated, according to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, on the third Monday in February.  (As an aside, it’s a bit ironic since his birthday is February 22nd and the third Monday can never be later than the 21st!)
