Presidents’ Day – no class

February 17

Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday established to honor the Presidents of the United States.  Well…. not really.  The official federal holiday is actually Washington’s Birthday, to be celebrated, according to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, on the third Monday in February.  (As an aside, it’s a bit ironic since his birthday is February 22nd and the third Monday can never be later than the 21st!) It was later proposed that the holiday be called Presidents’ Day since so many states also celebrate Lincoln’s birthday; Congress rejected the name change.

Regardless of what the official federal holiday is called, at Chicago Grammar School we embrace the opportunity for teaching moments as we commemorate the birthdays of Washington and Lincoln, honor the accomplishments of so many of our Presidents, and celebrate the dignity of the Constitution.
