Indigenous Peoples’ Day / Columbus Day – No Class

October 12

It used to be simple:  celebrate the discovery of America and enjoy the day off.  Today, it’s more complicated; and that’s a good thing.  That being said, we recognize that Indigenous Peoples’ Day/Columbus Day classroom lessons must be developmentally appropriate:  we begin with identifying who, where and when before analyzing why.  All classes participate in activities that raise awareness of the rich history, culture, and traditions of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas.  And while our youngest students chant “Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492,”  we guide our Junior High and Middle Schoolers through a critical examination of the traditional Columbus narrative – inviting them to question and encouraging them to develop their own understanding.
