Columbus Day – no class
Oct 8, 2018
It used to be simple: celebrate the discovery of America and enjoy the day off. Today, it’s more complicated; and that’s a good thing. That being said, we recognize that Columbus Day classroom lessons must be developmentally appropriate: we begin with identifying who, where and when before analyzing why. So while our youngest students chant “Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492,” we guide our Middle Schoolers through a critical examination of the traditional Columbus narrative – inviting them to question and encouraging them to develop their own understanding.
