Science topics in preschool and kindergarten emerge from the interest of the children. High interest topics revolve around exploring the natural world.
We divide science for the elementary grades into subjects that roughly correspond to the periods of history the children are studying. As they study the Ancients (grades 1 and 5), the students learn about the things the Ancients could see -- animal life, the human body, plants - Biology. Similarly, study of the Middle Ages aligns with Astronomy and Earth Science. Students learn about Chemistry in conjunction with Early Modern Times, and the Modern World provides an appropriate context for exploring Physics. Upon entering the upper elementary grades, the study of science is characterized by the making of connections. Students learn to make connections between the branches of science, between science and history, and between the scientific method and the rules of logic. They use the logic of the scientific method to test new knowledge through experimentation. CGS uses the Real Science-4-Kids textbook series. |
